If you have a telephone, robocalls may be ruining your day. I’m Kati Daffan, an attorney at the Federal Trade Commission. If you answer the phone and hear a recorded message instead of a live person, it’s a robocall. If the recording is a sales message and you haven’t given your written permission to get calls from the company on the other end, the call is illegal period.
So when you get an illegal robocall, here’s what to do. Hang up the phone. Don’t press one to speak to a live operator. And don’t press any other number to get off the list. If you respond by pressing any number, it will probably just lead to more robocalls.
You might consider contacting your phone provider and asking them to block the number and whether they charge for that service. Remember that telemarketers change caller ID information easily and often. So it might not be worth paying a fee to block a number that will change.
Finally, contact the FTC to report your experience. You can do that online at ftc.gov or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP. To learn more about illegal robocalls and what the FTC is doing to stop them, visit ftc.gov/robocalls. That’s ftc.gov/robocalls.

The Federal Trade Commission deals with issues that touch the economic life of every American. It is the only federal agency with both consumer protection and competition jurisdiction in broad sectors of the economy. The FTC pursues vigorous and effective law enforcement; advances consumers’ interests by sharing its expertise with federal and state legislatures and U.S. and international government agencies; develops policy and research tools through hearings, workshops, and conferences; and creates practical and plain-language educational programs for consumers and businesses in a global marketplace with constantly changing technologies.

Hello sir It's me Prince Fakrul Islam from Dhaka Bangladesh i have loss everything can you please help me Ftc US government. Thanks

KATI: do the State spam call preventer lists help protect us? (mine is Indiana) i get lots of spam calls and I'm on the list. HELP !!!!!??????
AHHAHAHA OMG ARE ALL FTC AGAENTS AS PREETY AS YOU – Hey were both tech experts – financials operations and business IT Bachelors degree – SHE IS MINE!!! STAY BACK!!
Signed up for the Do Not Call List… Never stopped the robocalls!
How about building a telephone wall and have India China Pakastan and messico pay for that wall!!! Walls work. A simple switch upgrade can put a stop to these. Every subscriber has a did and the did put a checksum stamp on each active number and have the number verified at the switch just like with anonymous callers. Use a vertical service code such as *45 to activate it and *44 or *46 to deactivate it. So why won't you do this? It can be done you just won't do it because the telecoms get paid for each caller id transmitted rather it's valid or not a practice known as cnam dipping. How much are the big telcos paying you guys in hush money to continue to allow these robocalls?
Thank you Amash Biggs and massie for voting no on stopping robocalls remember their names and try to get their home phone numbers so you can forward these calls over to them.
The TFC's efforts to stop robocalls is a complete joke…because they are making ZERO effort.
The FTC should initiate legal action on our behalf, to the effect of $ in our pockets.
'Consider blocking the number'…..are you serious? How about doing your job and put a stop to this. Talk about a useless system, maybe instead of trying to hijack the internet from its citizens, you could maybe work on scammers and robocalls?
Here is the fun part there is now a program you can download that puts a robot service on your phone. That if a robocall comes in the program you installed answers it. And your robo call will tie up thier robocall as long as it can. Even for an hour if thiers stays connected. That is the best way if you get a lot of robocalls.
Order a marine air horn from amazon, inexpensive and gratifying when used.
This woman is really pretty.
I called back out of frustration.
Was on the phone for probably 10 seconds.
Any idea of how much money that will cost me?
I answered the robocall saying 911 what’s your emergency they hung up lol
FTC, I know you mean well, but I think this advice needs some advice. I do the exact opposite of what you suggest and here's why I think everyone should. First, I answer every call if it's convenient and I'm not doing anything else. I never answer if someone in my vicinity is talking in any way that might allow the caller to know anything about us or use any sort of voice recognition. But if I can answer I do. Next, I always hit the button that takes me to a live operator. Finally, I do nothing else. I don't talk, I don't engage, I simply wait it out. They will waste anywhere between 30 seconds and 2 minutes of their time before hanging up. It's most likely someone that's paid less than minimum wage so i haven't wasted much of the robocaller's money, but I have done two important things: I have wasted some of their money–enough that if everyone did this, they would go out of business–and just as importantly I have made the great personal sacrifice of eating away at their time so they have less of it to call other people. Some people go so far as to engage them–being impertinent, smart-ass, or just downright rude–you can call the person every dirty word in every language you know and maybe get some satisfaction out of it. But the person on the other end is some poor slob making a pittance. It doesn't make the world a better place to be mean to them. Just waste the money of the person who is paying them to call you.
If you look at companies privacy statements you will find they share your address/number with their subsidiaries which in turn may share or sell your info to others.
I may have got this mixed up with Robocop videos.
Yo shes kinda cute, i dig it
This lady is one of the real scammers
She's pretty.
You losers. You can't block these 1 by 1 so why even suggest it? You cowards are doing nothing except shilling for Verizon and the other telecoms. Gutless, toothless fcc and ftc. You've failed your mission.
Do you know what is more aggravating than a robocall? Filling out the form on the FTC website KNOWING absolutely NOTHING can or will be done. I think anyone convicted of working in a telemarketer/robocall call center should be looked in a windowless room with a phone that rings every 15 minutes, 24/7/365 and a quarter for the rest of their lives.
Honestly, these days whenever I get a call from area codes I don't know, I let it go to voicemail. iPhone shows the location which the area code corresponds to, so you can easily tell where the call comes from.
Another way to tell is the day of the week and the time. After business hours? Most likely spam. And if it's somebody you know you would have their number registered on your phone, and they would either leave a message, shoot you a text or call back 5, 15, 30 later, usually not several hours and always near lunch time and dinner time just by coincidence…
Somebody who really wants to reach you will leave a voicemail. If they don't and called at funny hours and are from an unfamiliar area code: SPAM!
Finally, you can configure your phone to block the caller, so calls won't disturb you.
In other words, the FTC is doing nothing to stop them because they don't know how too. But the taxpayer pays millions every year to keep them employed.
Yes, they're ruining my life!
FTC just tells you to go to do not call . gov to file a complaint instead.
How about getting together with phone manufacturers and add a "BLOCK AND FORWARD THIS NUMBER TO FTC" … Reporting through the "Don't Call" site has WAY too many steps. It needs to be IMMEDIATE. One step.
I'm in love <3
The FTC, like about 99.9% of all government agencies, is a "paper tiger" and can't do squat to stop these calls. If you tell the spammer that you're on the "Do Not Call" list they just laugh because they don't care. Have heard that some of these spammers are outside of the U.S. so they don't feel they need to obey the law. I can't help but think the phone companies could do something but they won't because they make money from selling numbers to these scum bag telemarketers !
I use Nomorobo… www.nomorobo.com It's a good, and free service for VOIP land lines. The Do not call list does not work.
The Do-Not-Call list is a joke. Reporting the calls is a waste of time. Caller ID doesn't work, either, because they can spoof numbers. I've called back local ones only to find that the number is not valid or out of service. Somebody is making big money off the scamming and it's not just the telemarketers!
i dont know about ruining, but they keep calling my every morning, i have filed a complaint already with the FTC i have 3 ways of blocking them and they still call, soo i been having people myself included call them all day and when they pick up we place the phone down beside non stop porn lol
Here's what I do.
On my iPhone I create a contact and call it 'Z junk'.
Then I add any telemarketing calls to that contact.
Finally, I go into the phone app, select Z junk and tap Block this Caller. If they call again they'll be blocked.
It does not stop new numbers but it is satisfying to add them to the Naughty list. After a year of doing this I'm getting significantly less junk calls.
My advice to stop political calls if a human is on the line. Do what I did after my second call from the same candidate after I told them the first time to stop calling me. I simply told them that thanks to you I will not vote for there candidate, not that I was going to anyway LOL.
This advice, unfortunately, does not work. Hanging up on them does not work. They keep calling and calling. I almost hung up on a recording this morning that began, "This is an important message…" but it was from my pharmacy to tell me my prescription was ready.
The bottom line is, however, that hanging up the phone does not terminate the calls. I think picking up the phone in the first place tells the subhumans that the number is valid, and you don't have to press a button. They spoof their phone numbers so, unless you can trick them into giving out a real phone number, you can't turn them in to the FTC and/or file a Do Not Call suit against them.
