Known as the longest canal ever built in North America, this 460 mile long canal ran all the way from Toledo, Ohio, to Evansville, Indiana. Despite only being operational for just over a decade, it literally cleared the way for railway expansion, and soon it was replaced with the faster and more cost-effective railways.

Good old Simon. We have a Thumbnail with Simon giving a Thumb's Up to a Massive American Death Toll. If you hate America that much, just do videos on Europe, or the Moon, or poetry, or house cats.
You could do an entire episode on Evansville during WW2
O-H
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. 184 miles still exist ad a National Park in Maryland USA along the Potomac River. And, last i checked, still has a section still full of water, active Canal boats, and working locks.
Never thought I would hear Evansville mentioned on a video by Simon & Crew haha!
i heard the swiss rail system is the densest and most used one in the world. sounds like an absolute megaproject to me, wanna make an episode on it?
So US folks this canal is a piddling little "ditch" and hardly a "mega-project"; when you compare it against Panama, Suez, the St Lawrence Seaway or even the Manchester Ship canal. Look at the figures 5 million cubic yards excavated is a drop in the ocean compared to the 48 million cubic yards of the "quite small" Manchester Ship canal. For the US the big transport vessel was given by Simon at the end, it's the railways.
Ohio is the center of the universe!
There is a nice museum in Delphi, Indiana concerning the Wabash and Erie Canal. There are also canal boats there. Portions of the canal still exists there.
For a more modern canal megaproject, the California Aqueduct goes 400 miles down the middle of California.
Simon's writers sound like spoiled upper middle class 21st century kids, wailing over the lot of the poor canal workers, when everybody else in the 19th century had cushy jobs, like farming.
I’ve got an old mule and her name is Sal, Fifteen years on the Erie Canal.
She’s a good old worker and a good old pal, Fifteen years on the Erie Canal.
We’ve hauled some barges in our day, Filled with lumber, coal and hay,
And ev’ry inch of the way I know, From Albany to Buffalo.
Low bridge, ev’rybody down, Low bridge, We must be getting near a town.
You can always tell your neighbor, You can always tell your pal,
If he’s ever navigated on the Erie Canal.
The Rideau Canal would be a fun video
speaking of canals, could you do a video about the cape cod canal?
Ahhh yes, America, ignorant under educated fools who insist their country isn't built on countless deaths for the sake of "freedom" what a fucking joke.
you got one in the barrel for Rideau canal? the link for most of upper Canada!
Here in Ohio there's a serious effort to preserve the canals. Living in a county with them, the engineering it took never ceases to amaze me…. Hand tools!!
The irony of the French and Indian War 50 years before, between the French, British and Native Americans. The Natives were probably pissed, you're right.
These past few days watching my crypto portfolio decline is very disheartening. Holding doesn't really profit much. Any ideas on how to earn better on the short run?
Hah typical for the us, lets build something great together, but im not going to pay for it😂
Good to see all our brave, fearless females taking up these jobs.. Thus saving the weak feeble males from certain death

They thumbnail goes crazy
I live right near Logansport Indiana so this was really interesting to hear about.
I'm from Ohio more specifically Toledo. And we have a few metropolitan parks that preserve the canal. In Sidecut, you can see the locks that lowered and raised the canal. And Providence park where you can ride on the actual canal
I think most mega projects were supplemented by alcohol.
There are so many songs about the Wabash.
Native Americans who were annoyed that the land they stole from other Indians was being stolen from them by white man.
The Beltway Bandits Mat 👍

Heres a 'mega project' that turned out to be a state backed scam, the Irish hospital sweepstakes! Check it out, it deserves an airing by your good self Simon.
👍👍👍👍
Chicago is hardly an 'Eastern' city. In fact, it's west of the entire route on the canal.
I live in a house that has the canal running through the back property ivr got local stories about it and the creation of the canal. You can see where one of the locks use to be
It seams odd that they had so many problems when canals that are still just as usable today were being built in Europe 50 years before they started building this one
Digging such canal with Dawn of rail on the horizon sounds at least short-sighted.
8 million bucks, post-inflation.
For a financially mismanaged government project.
Nowadays, the government couldn't sneeze for less than 10 million.

I’m an airline pilot. Based out of Cincinnati and NYC over the years. It’s incredible to launch out of NY and you could pickup a canal in NY and make it all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. You can see these canals or bits bs pieces of the canals easily in Ohio.
Ohhh I made to the first 100 comments! I’m going to use this chance to say nothing of value or substance.
I wanted Simon to blaze on about beavers and muskrats
