MLBTR’s TC Zencka makes his video debut and joins veteran catcher Jeff Todd to debate the merits of an automated strike zone.
Check out TC’s recent article on which pitchers should fear robo umps:
Established in 2005, MLB Trade Rumors is a clearinghouse for relevant, legitimate baseball rumors. Reading MLBTR is like looking over the shoulder of every GM, agent, and player in baseball. The site focuses on the hot stove – trades and free agent signings. Rumors come from established journalists, including our own writers, and always include a link to the source material.

First argument between robot umpire and robot manager.

No way!!
Robo umps will definitely force batters to swing at pitches they normally leave, especially the high strike at the letters. On the flip side, unless it 100% correct 100% of the time, they can't use it. Remember the 'cyclops' in tennis? Terribly inconsistent.
Robo umps make the game better. Do traditionalists want to go back to pre-Jackie Robinson baseball?
Baseball is one of the last vestiges of Americana…………I'm a traditionalist, leave the game alone. If you have to change calling of balls and strikes have computers gauge the true effectiveness of the Umps and their calls over "x" amount of seasons and if they consistently mess up and have a higher than acceptable rate of missed calls then they should go back to Umpire School 101 or be demoted and/or dismissed for failure to do the job.
If anyone wants to know how the auto ump is, reach out to wally backman or frank viola. They just had to deal with it in indy ball
the people that want this crap are people that shouldnt be watching baseball
I think there is a time and place for it, especially during the postseason. I think it should be used as only a back up. Umpires should be able to squeeze or stretch the strike zone according to how pitchers pitch, but if an ump blinks at the wrong time, gets shaded by the batter or catcher, he can wait on the robocall. If they see it clear and want to make a call they make the call.
A strike is a strike no matter whether: the pitcher is a rookie or a veteran, the catcher catches it well or not, the last 8 pitches were balls or strikes, etc. etc. Just call a strike a strike. It's time for it. Umps have called belt high down the middle a ball and pitches a foot off the plate outside a strike so they can't be trusted to do it anymore.
Not only will having strikes called accurate help a hitter with a good eye, it could help a pitcher who is accurate. If I’m a good pitcher I don’t want to depend on a catcher “framing” the pitch right to get a strike. I want a strike called a strike regardless if my catcher stinks at framing or drops the pitch.
TCs beard rules!
GIB ME ROBO UMPS
I prefer to watch the telecast that has the K-zone displayed at all times. Instant confirmation that the ump is a WORTHLESS BUM!
Did I ever enjoy watching an overhead shot of a Tom Glavin pitch called a strike that was a foot (a foot!) off the plate? No. At the very least we won’t have to watch Joey Votto complain about a call and we’ll get more offense because the batters don’t have to adjust to a wildly unfair zone that changes from day to day. Finally, baseball didn’t get ruined when the 2nd baseman was forced to touch the bag in a double play. This will only improve the game and the experience.
I say human umps with more Questec/PITCHf/x (or whatever system they are using these days) to enforce accountability. Publicly post umpire results for transparency for the year and have a policy for demotion or termination for failure to meet standards. Pay umpires based on quality of service for the prior year (merit basis) rather than years of service. Don't give any veteran umps any extra rope to be Joe West or Angel Hernandez. I understand that no one is perfect. These guys are human and subject to call a stinker or two on occasion, but like the rest of baseball let's have tight standards over 162 games. Like ball players umps should cycle out when they become bad at their job.
Its not hard to understand. A human ump will still be behind home plate. They would now properly focus on batter/catcher interference plays, a check swing and assistance from 1B or 3B ump, and of course tags at the plate, etc. No human error any longer on ball/strike zones will IMHO make for a faster game. A strike is a strike a ball is a ball – lets move it along. No issue from pitcher side, no issue from hitter. It will move the game along so much better then egregious and erroneous errors by human umps and phantom strike zone compared to rule book defining zone.
Clearly the width of the plate will be easy to lock in for all….however, I am interested to know how they will address the Top of Zone or Bottom of Zone when it comes to difference in Altuve vs Judge size guys, etc.
From a Catcher standpoint, do your job of calling the pitch. Framing is silly anyway ~ "earning a strike" was never part of the rules. So now, just get ready to throw out a runner attempting to steal, or picking one off that is sleeping on the paths, etc. Do your job for plays at the plate, that's it. Plain and simple.
I could talk all day about why I am so excited for electronic zones.
