US culture does have a somewhat unique view on crime as being nearly not wrong to wrong depending on the value or amount of something. Other cultures don't see it that way. "yaaa but he only stole his neighbors $14 used bike" doesn't work that way in a country like (example Japan) where the very point and problem is that he stole. that he stole something from his neighbor. It doesn't matter if the item itself was appraised at 12 or 120000. In Russia or China or a dozen other places, the crime, the problem, the wrongdoing is that you are, and its very explicit, you are not allowed to transport illicit drugs. "Yaa wahhlll.. it was only .7 grams" isn't their moral relatavisic view on how this works. The problem, the crime, the wrongdoing is that he knew that was illegal and did it anyway. .7 or 700 isn't the point.
This idea that it's wrong or not that wrong, its not really a crime based on the sale values etc I find thats a big flaw in the USA (and some other) cultures and a flaw in how they understand right and wrong.
It seems to me, so its been said by many who lived in Russia, this was not a case of him accidentally doing it, forgetting they were in there, this was not even trying to hide them. This is someone who had been let off before, given special leniency for being a foreigner and a celebrity of sorts and then decided they have the right to do it. Like they are 'flexing' and doing it 'because they can' and nobody dared to stop them type of thing.
This reminded me of a local Hell-related Biker member who started helping himself to free beers at a local hangout. The tavern boss allowed it as a favor. The member started doing it like it was his right. a bartender once halted him pouring drinks for him and friends and the member reacted as if this little puke didn't seem to know who he was? He was pouring himself beers believing he was 'flexing' or showing power or something?
A few months later, it was quite the local story, after pouring himself beers on tap, as usual, more to 'show he can' than anything else, someone walked into the tavern in broad daylight and shot the Beer-taker Member in the head.
Nobody saw it. err 'nobody saw it' but a dozen patrons would later swear the assassin looked exactly like a well known enforcer for that local bike club.
You understand that this penalty wasn't because "phht he only took what.. maybe a 12-pack worth of beer worth what, $18 dollars at most phhhht??".. No, he got the death penalty because they determined he was stealing things from civilians and even worse was doing it like it was his right to break the rules and that nobody dare say otherwise.
