With more board configurations than there are atoms in the universe, the ancient Chinese game of Go has long been considered a grand challenge for artificial intelligence.
On March 9, 2016, the worlds of Go and artificial intelligence collided in South Korea for an extraordinary best-of-five-game competition, coined The DeepMind Challenge Match. Hundreds of millions of people around the world watched as a legendary Go master took on an unproven AI challenger for the first time in history.
Directed by Greg Kohs and with an original score by Academy Award nominee Hauschka, AlphaGo had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. It has since gone on to win countless awards and near universal praise for a story that chronicles a journey from the halls of Oxford, through the backstreets of Bordeaux, past the coding terminals of DeepMind in London, and ultimately, to the seven-day tournament in Seoul. As the drama unfolds, more questions emerge: What can artificial intelligence reveal about a 3000-year-old game? What can it teach us about humanity?

“I want my style of Go to be something different, something new, my own thing, something that no one has thought of before.” Lee Sedol, Go Champion (18 World Titles).
“We think of DeepMind as kind of an Apollo program effort for AI. Our mission is to fundamentally understand intelligence and recreate it artificially.” Demis Hassabis, Co-Founder & CEO, DeepMind.
“The Game of Go is the holy grail of artificial intelligence. Everything we’ve ever tried in AI, it just falls over when you try the game of Go.” Dave Silver, Lead Researcher for AlphaGo.

I was surprised to find myself crying while watching this. Lee Sedol had to publicly display his weakness over and over again and yet he continued to show up and try so hard in the face of an actually impossible challenge. His spirit and courage was awe-inspiring. This is what makes humans extraordinary. There will come a time in everyone’s life that we are faced with the ultimate challenge, it is with fierce determination and grit that we may win or lose, but it is in these moments where we will see a glimpse of the divine inside of us.
1:02:45 "I want to apologize for being so powerless" This broke my heart so much
Of course we all want the human to win!!!!
Now if they could use this AI to actually solve the climate crisis and climate injustice as well as international conflicts…!!! 🤔
welp it took 13 people and countless hours of Go more than any human could play in their lifetime to beat a human…
Bless you, Lee Sedol.
What was the old American fable or song, about John Henry versus the Steam Hammer? John Henry, a human railroad nail driver, was beaten by the steam driven MACHINE hammer.
Did I see Sergey Brin at 59:08 ???
Lee sidol resigned from professional go due to the alphago experience in 2019. I think the optimistic narrative in this documentary should be questioned.
One year later when I watch this documentary again, I love it. In last year, I have taken classes of deep learning and reinforcement learning, and start understanding the working principle of Alpha Go. I am actually just offered with a position of machine learning engineer. This documentary has literally changed my career path
When he said they didn’t know the strategy to tunnel around the sides and attack from the back, my friends and I did that over 30 years ago .
Bravo. Brilliant DOC. Very well done, indeed
A new AI beating this AI, i personally don't care. AI beating a human, that's what its programmed to do, but a human out thinking it? That's why the new version exists.. The fact Lee won proves he's the greatest, even above the new AI.
I didn't know what Go was and didn't know anything about this event, so I clicked on this knowing nothing… and Lee Sedol winning made me cry. Fan Hui was so great too, truly amazing guy. When Lee won, TEARS! GODS MOVE. Move 78. Lee Sedol is now like a hero to me. Including Fan Hui.
Also isn't it fascinating that it took a whole team to develop a program, for 2 years with Google, to beat 1 guy?
I wonder AI is designed by human which means human wins the nature or just we find the another way how this universe expresses.
AI,stands for absolutely impossible, this is out right propaganda to portray AI in a good light and how advanced it is, in fact its all bollocks :)trust me, no cunt can replicate mankinds conscencious :):)
Maybe one day…
Brute force is not intelligence.
Those developers know HOW to do, but they don't comprehend the WHY, the teleology… this will end!
what if the AI threw the game because it knew people would fear it too much if it won them all
Fascinating. Aware how white males dominate the AI community in this story. I woman. I POC. We still need to work on equality and diversity.
Has there ever been any public discussion about what Fan Hui found in his play with AlphaGo leading up to the challenge that he said "I found BIG WEAKNESS with AlphaGo"? Would be fascinating to know if it was the same weakness that led AlphaGo to totally discount the possibility of move 78 being played when it went through the tree search.
Incredible to even imagine how amazing the human mind is. It not A.I, its the human mind that works to build it. Even if in the future, A.I changes to a whole new different level, it still will need a human mind. EVOLUTION….
One of my favorite documentaries I have ever watched… watching games live was breath taking and this video captures that feeling well. Great job on all fronts and Lee would be the perfect ambassador for humanity for AI to learn from.. Lee gives me hope for the human race surviving itself. Much love ❤.
i saw sergey brin..
who else did
He might have been the last human to win against that thing.
Jesus is like that winning piece put way in advance and everyone is like wtf why did he put a put that piece there.
This has to be in the top three docs I’ve ever seen. Fascinating stuff.
Why are they so eager to create AI? Why do we need it? I am not a scientist, but many bright minds have warned the humanity about the potential threat of AI. Stephen Hawking can for sure see the danger more clearly than us, normal people. It's scary that a senseless machine can be cold bloodedly smarter than people who created it…🙍
