Learn how to invest your money into the stock market for beginners using the Canadian trading app/service Wealthsimple. Wealthsimple has a commission-free trading app called Wealthsimple Trade and a robot-investor called Wealthsimple Invest. In this video, I will be showing you a full overview & review of the Wealthsimple Invest platform showing how I invested my first $10,000.

Wealthsimple Invest allows you to choose from different portfolio these (standard, socially-responsible, and halal) as well as different risk levels. Depending on what theme you choose and your risk level, the stocks you are invested in are different, and the allocation of your money in stock, bonds, and gold also varies.

The standard portfolio allows you to invest in ETFs (exchange-traded funds) that provide you broad-exposure to the stock market. This allows you to have diversification in your portfolio and have you invested in companies all over the world. This portfolio also has exposure to gold and bonds.

The socially-responsible theme allows you to invest in an ETF that Wealthsimple has created that “invest mostly in low carbon, clean tech, or sustainable growth companies. This portfolio charges higher fees than our standard portfolio”. This portfolio also has exposure to gold and bonds.

Lastly, the halal theme is invested in individual, hand-picked companies that follow Islamic principles. There is no exposure to gold or bonds.

The higher the risk level you choose, the higher concentration there is in stocks. This will lead to greater volatility in the short-term but greater gains in the long-term. A less risky portfolio will be the opposite and have more focus on bonds & gold, and less money invested in stocks. This leads to smaller gains and less risk in the short-term and long-term.
