– iRobot’s Roomba series of robot vacuums have been helping to keep homes clean for almost 20 years now. The familiar round disc that zips around your home, picking up dirt and debris, has changed little physically. However, steady improvements have made these purpose-built robots even more refined and powerful. The @iRobot Roomba E5 is the recipient of many of the most essential innovations, including more powerful suction that is up to 5x stronger than their previous 600 series. A line of robots that still bumps around in homes today. And while the Roomba E5 isn’t brand, constant software updates since its debut in 2018 and an entry price of $449 CAD have made it a popular option for new owners.

Aside from the more powerful suction, the Roomba E5 now has WiFi, and smart assistant support built right in. You don’t even have to use the app to get your robot to start vacuuming. Just yell at Alexa or Google. Other significant changes include a bin that can be washed with soap and water. iRobot has moved components that previously lived in the container, to allow much easier cleanup, while increasing storage volume, so it can pick up more between sessions.

The iRobot Roomba E5 shares much a lot in common with its higher-end self-emptying brother, the Roomba i7+, including the overall design and the dual brush mechanism. It uses a pair of rollers instead of the brushes of past models. The rollers, which were first introduced in their 800 series, prevents hair from getting stuck, making it ideal for pet owners. And while it doesn’t have some of the more advanced features like the self-emptying docking station, or the charge and resume, or the advanced mapping, the lack of features is actually a strength as it really makes things simple. You can set the iRobot Roomba E5 to vacuum daily on a schedule, and it will return to the docking station on its own when it’s done, or when it’s full.
